Booze and Gambling may not have shot up in the recession, but literary escapism has been on the up since the dow started to dive.
Romance -the traditional escape for the fairer sex - and Science Fiction - the traditional choice for men who when they want to stick their head in the clouds - have experienced big boosts in the last quarter.

Other escapist literature also has done well: Although most book sales were flat or down in February 2009 from the year before, a spokesperson for the Borders book chain says that science fiction and fantasy were up—as were humor titles." - Yahoo
Just avoid George Orwell, Ayn Rand, and the rest of the dysotopic futures when picking your SF and you should be good to go!
